You want to learn how to read Torah. Or chant a Haftarah. Or learn Hebrew. You need Jewtor – a personal tutor to help you learn: Hebrew, Torah, Haftarah, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, and any other Jewish subjects.
Why? Maybe you live far from a Jewish metropolis. Maybe your rabbi or cantor is too busy to sit down with you one-on-one to help you learn how to chant Torah or Haftarah. Maybe you’re too shy to ask for a class in nusach, the traditional way to lead Jewish prayer services. Maybe you’d like to improve your Hebrew reading, so you can follow the Torah reading in synagogue, understand the words of the siddur (Jewish prayer book), or get yourself ready for a visit to Israel by brushing up on your modern Hebrew conversation.
You might be a parent of a bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah child who needs tutoring. Or you might just want to do some learning yourself. Especially if you didn’t learn these skills as a kid, or if it has been a long time since your bar or bat mitzvah, it can be intimidating to start as an adult. Perhaps you’re ready for an Adult Bat Mitzvah.
That’s where Jewtor – one-on-one Jewish tutoring – can help you, in a non-threatening, supportive learning environment through one-on-one sessions with a gentle, supportive private Jewish studies tutor.
Jewtor is a new Jewish tutoring service that you can use from your own home or office – all you need is a telephone or a Skype connection. I’m Bettina Schwarzman, the Jewish tutor behind Jewtor. I made aliyah, lived in Israel for over a decade, and graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with degrees in Education and History. I regularly read Torah, chant megillot, and lead services in my synagogue.
I will give you private tutoring lessons over the phone (or Skype), with a copy of the same materials that you have in front of you (textbook, or prayer book, or Biblical materials.) Lessons can be half an hour, an hour, or more. I will make personalized recordings for you to practice learning trope or prayers. I’m very flexible with timing, and available as often as you’d like, Sunday to Friday.
I teach adults as well as children. And most of all, I try to be gentle and friendly, and not at all intimidating. (This is the part that both the kids and the grownups really appreciate!)
If you’ve been waiting to start learning Jewish texts and synagogue skills, this could be the way for you to ease into a path of Jewish growth that you choose, a path where a helpful tutor will be with you every step of the way.
