If you’re members of a synagogue or temple, we work with your rabbi or cantor to tailor your child’s learning to what he or she will need to know. If you’re having a private Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony at home or at a destination, our tutors can officiate at the service, and we can also connect you with rabbis in the US, Canada, and Israel for the ceremony.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah learning at Jewtor
At Jewtor, we start wherever each child is. (Many of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah families don’t belong to a synagogue or temple, and often there isn’t one nearby.) For some kids, that means starting at aleph – the first letter of the Hebrew aleph-bet. For other kids, who may have had some Hebrew school or Jewish day school, we review what they might have forgotten and then get them started on moving quickly forward in their Jewish learning.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah education at Jewtor: Hebrew, Torah, Haftarah, prayers – and values
We teach kids how to read Hebrew, how to chant Torah and Haftarah, and we teach them how to chant the prayers, all based on what they need to learn for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. (If the Bar/Bat Mitzvah will be at a synagogue or temple, we work with your rabbi or cantor to help your child learn exactly what he/she will be called upon to do at the service.) But we don’t stop with the mechanics. At Jewtor, we also teach Jewish values and concepts that every Jewish kid should know. We teach Jewish holidays as they come up during the year.
Why do we do all this? Because a Bar or Bat Mitzvah isn’t a one-day event. It’s a major milestone in your child’s Jewish learning, and your child deserves to know how wonderful and deep Jewish tradition is.

How long does it take to learn for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?
Most kids start learning with us about a year before their Bar or Bat Mitzvah date. (Want to calculate your Hebrew birthday?) Some start earlier, and that’s good, because then there’s time for deeper learning of Jewish texts and values, and to become proficient in Hebrew.
We work with parents and kids to focus on what needs to be learned in the time available. Sometimes families start with another tutor that doesn’t work out. Sometimes life happens and there isn’t a year before the big day.
