Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Lessons with Jewtor

Welcome to Jewtor, where we’ve been revolutionizing Bar/Bat Mitzvah education since 2011. We offer comprehensive online Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons, providing a flexible and personalized learning experience for your child. We do online individual lessons, not group classes, so that each student can learn at their own pace and schedule. Our team of professional tutors, including rabbis, cantors, and Jewish educators, are dedicated to delivering engaging and effective lessons that work for you and for your son or daughter.

We’re proud to now be tutoring younger siblings of kids whose older brothers and sisters were our students. And we’re also delighted to continue with students who want to keep learning with Jewtor after their Bar or Bat Mitzvah!

Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Lessons, and how to choose a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutor for your Child

  • Your child needs to learn for their bar/bat mitzvah, and the online bar/bat mitzvah tutors at Jewtor can help your son or daughter learn what they need for the big day. (If you’re looking for an adult bar/bat mitzvah tutor, we do that, too.)

  • You want a bar/bat mitzvah tutor who can give your child individual, personalized tutoring, to help them learn in a fun and helpful program tailored for them. Our meticulously-selected tutors are Jewish professionals – rabbis, cantors, Jewish educators – who can help your child learn for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah in a fun, engaging program that focuses on your child. We understand kids and how they learn.

  • Especially for families that aren’t affiliated with a temple or synagogue, Jewtor’s tutors specialize in getting kids up to speed gently, so they can learn both the skills for their bar or bat mitzvah day as well as Jewish values and knowledge that they can use throughout their lifetimes.

  • You might live in New York or Florida, in a large Jewish population center, where everything, including bar/bat mitzvah lessons, is expensive. Or you might be in a small Jewish community in the Midwest or anywhere on the planet, where you don’t have a local teacher you can work with. (We’ve taught kids whose families were the only Jews around for hundreds of miles!) Wherever you are, in the US or abroad, Jewtor’s online bar/bat mitzvah tutors are here to help.

Why Choose Jewtor for Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Lessons?

  • Flexible and Convenient: In today’s fast-paced world, finding time for Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons can be challenging. That’s why Jewtor offers flexible, one-on-one online lessons scheduled at your convenience. Our live lessons are fully interactive and dedicated entirely to your child.
  • Top-Rated Lessons: Since 2011, Jewtor has been providing top-rated online Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons. Our tutors are highly skilled and patient, working one-on-one with our students to prepare them for their big day without pressure. But we don’t stop at the basics. We also teach Jewish values, Jewish holidays, and lessons from the Torah to ensure a well-rounded Jewish education during these formative years.
  • Bar/Bat Mitzvah Curriculum: What do online bar/bat mitzvah lessons cover? Some parts of our online bar/bat mitzvah lessons are standard, and we configure some parts based on your child’s prior learning and any requirements from the rabbi you’re working with. (And if you don’t have one, just ask us for recommendations.) For most students, we devote a half-hour of our online bar/bat mitzvah lessons to the practicalities of learning Hebrew and how to chant their Torah and Haftarah readings. The second part of the lesson focuses on Jewish values from reading and analyzing Bible stories, which the kids love. When a Jewish holiday is coming up, we devote time to the holiday, how it’s observed, what its background is, and what it means to us today. Our bar/bat mitzvah lessons are personalized to each student and their needs. This is one of the great benefits of individual, personalized instruction, and our kids and parents appreciate it.
  • Learning Hebrew: Most of our students start out knowing little or no Hebrew. We get them up to speed in reading and pronouncing Hebrew so they can shine on their big days. Learning Hebrew is the building block for being able to chant Torah and Haftarah, and it is a skill that will help the children well past their bar or bat mitzvah. We usually start with a Hebrew primer, a book especially formulated for youngsters taking bar/bat mitzvah lessons. We learn all the Hebrew letters, building on the student’s previous knowledge. We gradually build knowledge of Hebrew using concepts that the child is familiar with. Once the student knows the entire alef-bet, we have a choice of how to continue. This depends on the interests of the student, the family, and the time available. We might continue delving deeper into prayerbook Hebrew, and study the synagogue service. Or we might decide to focus on modern, conversational Hebrew. Or we start preparing specific texts for the bar/bat mitzvah service.
  • Educating the Person: We work with the bar/bat mitzvah students to help them feel that they have mastered the skills involved, so they (and you!) can be proud at their bar/bat mitzvah. And we also help them learn confidence through knowing that they’ve mastered the material.

Customized Learning Experience: Whether you’re a member of a synagogue or temple or planning a private ceremony, Jewtor works with you to customize your child’s learning experience. Our tutors can officiate at the service, and we can connect you with rabbis in the US, Canada, and Israel for a destination Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony (even if the destination is your home!).

Meeting Each Child Where They Are: At Jewtor, we meet each child where they are in their learning journey. We teach Hebrew reading, Torah and Haftarah chanting, and the prayers your child needs to learn, all based on what your child will need for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We work with your Rabbi, if you’re part of a synagogue or temple, to tailor the program for your child to meet any expectations or requirements. We also teach Jewish values and concepts, and cover Jewish holidays throughout the year.

Engaging Learning Experience: We utilize modern resources in our online lessons, ensuring an engaging learning experience. Our one-on-one lessons allow your child to learn at their own pace, free from distractions. We start where your child is now, and build a personal program to get him or her where they need to be. Because they never have to wait for other kids in a class, learning with Jewtor is efficient. And scheduling is simple: whatever time works for you and the tutor is good.

Accommodating Different Timelines: Most students begin learning with us about a year before their Bar or Bat Mitzvah date. Some start several years in advance, so that Jewtor serves as an alternative to Hebrew school, with time to really learn Hebrew, Torah stories, Jewish holidays, and Jewish values. Whatever your timeline is, our tutors will focus on what your child needs to learn in the time available. If you’re facing challenges or delays, don’t worry. Jewtor is here to help make your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah a wonderful experience.

Focused, Practical, and Convenient: At Jewtor, we see ourselves as your partners in preparing your child for this major milestone in their lives. Our online Bar/Bat mitzvah lessons eliminate the need for carpools, because parents these days are busy, too! We understand that kids and adults today have busy schedules, so we make our lessons focused, practical, and convenient. Our billing process is also easy – you’ll simply get an invoice by email each month for that month’s lessons, and you can pay online with a few clicks.

Destination bar mitzvahIt’s one thing for your child to learn Hebrew, and Jewish values, and lessons from the Hebrew Bible, and how to chant Torah and Haftarah – that’s what Jewtor does. But this learning isn’t theoretical. While bar/bat mitzvah lessons at Jewtor can last a lifetime, there’s a more immediate goal in mind: the Bar or Bat Mitzvah itself.

Some of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students and their families are members of synagogues or temples, and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah will simply take place there. But many of our families either don’t live near a shul (synagogue) or a Jewish community. Others want to have their child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah at a destination near home, wherever that may be, or in Israel.

We’re happy to say that some of our tutors can also come to officiate as the rabbi or cantor for your child. This is a great way to build upon the learning experience with a tutor that your child already knows.

And we also work with rabbis who will travel to officiate at your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Rabbi Jason Miller specializes in this, and will travel (and even bring a Torah) to your ceremony. You can contact him at mitzvahrabbi.com

We can also recommend rabbis for bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies in Israel – some of our families have done bar/bat mitzvahs in Israel, and it’s a great experience.

Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah rabbis and cantors will tailor the ceremony to your needs and the norms of all branches of Judaism – Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, and others. We take care of teaching your child what they need to learn, and we can help you find the right rabbi or cantor to officiate at the Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

FAQs - Bar/Bat Mitzvah Lessons

See our list of Hebrew textbooks that we use with our students.

Learning Hebrew really isn’t as hard as it looks. Yes, it’s a different alphabet (well, a different alef-bet!), but it’s much simpler than English. Think of how many tenses there are in English. Modern Hebrew only has four, and Biblical Hebrew really has only two, with arguably one more. We’ll help you learn the alef-bet, and the sky’s the limit from there.

Of course you can. We can even help you figure out some ideas on how to organize the happy event, whether that’s in your home town, in Israel, or a destination, including referrals to rabbis who we work with.

It happens, and we get that. Just give us 24 hours’ notice in order to not get billed for a lesson that you won’t be able to attend.

At the end of each month, we send you an invoice to your email. It comes with simple instructions on how to pay securely.

Most kids do an hour a week. That gives time for learning both content and skills.

We are available every day except Friday night and Saturday (aka Shabbat). Our tutors work with students around the world and are used to finding times that will work for you.

Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes. We recommend either one 60-minute session each week, or two 30– or 45-minute sessions.

Yes! That’s what we do, and we’ve worked successfully online with our students since 2011.

Most kids start learning with us about a year before their bar or bat mitzvah. This gives them time to both learn the skills they need for bar/bat mitzvah and begin to get a grounding in basic Judaism. Some start earlier, and that’s good, because then there’s time for deeper learning of Jewish texts and values, and to really become proficient in Hebrew.

When there isn’t much time, we modify our curriculum to focus on what your son or daughter needs to learn for the day itself. That might include learning the blessings for having an aliyah to the Torah, chanting a short Torah reading, singing key prayers, and more, all based on the time available.

The sooner you contact us, the better, so we can get started right away. And it’s fine to have multiple lessons a week, which will allow your son or daughter to quickly get up to speed. At Jewtor, we are happy to work with you in flexible scheduling, and because all our lessons are online, it’s easy to find times that work for you and your child.
