The Hebrew Alphabet: the Alef-Bet

  • Did you know that the term ‘alphabet’ originates from the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet: alef and bet?
  • Hebrew is read from right to left, and Hebrew books also open from right to left.
  • The Hebrew alphabet consists of 22 letters, with no specific letters for vowels. Vowels are indicated by small lines and dots under or over the letters.
  • Five of the letters are written differently if they are at the end of a word.
